Create a realistic wood texture in photoshop

In this tutorial I am going to create wood or wooden texture in photoshop.  You can create it by following the easy to understand steps.

  1. Create a new file of size 400X280 px. Create a new shape by using rounded rectangle with brown color. Apply blending options to it – drop shadow, inner glow and bevel.
  2. Select the shape by pressing Ctrl+left-click on the base layer. Create new layer with 75% opacity. Go to gradient. Change gradient type from solid to noise and smoothness to 50 %. Apply gradient vertically to layer. Make sure the shape is selected. Select mode as soft light from toolbar.
  3. Click on gradient layer and press Ctrl+Shift+U to change it to greyscale.
  4. Go to filter>Distort>Wave. Set min. and max. amplitude to 1, press randomize and apply.
  5. Add 3 more gradient layers in the same way as stated above. Just change gradient smoothness as 25, 50, 75, 100 % etc in gradient window. You can also change wave amplitude. I have used only upto max. as 2. Higher value will remove smoothness from texture.
  6. Change each gradient layer from normal to overlay from the layer window. You will get something like this. Do not worry if your texture looks too bad. Try changing the brown color of base layer, or changing opacity of gradient layers.
  7. Now to create light effect create new layer with 75% opacity. Open gradient window and create a black and white gradient. Apply it at an angle to layer. Change layer to overlay.
  8. Now go to Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast. Reduce contrast to soften light.

Tip: If you are unable to achieve good color results, try changing contrast of each gradient layer and the brown color of base layer.

You can obtain various textures of wood by modifying waves and gradients.
